Performance and Portability

Softmachinery is designing a mobile device operating system.

This mobile OS has a simple requirement.

  • be able to display High Definition video for 8 hours continuously

That’s a high level use case. All requirements can be derived or inferred from that.

  • The OS must be high performance, so it’ll be nice for the UI to have the WOW factor. In other words the UI will respond quickly when you tap the screen.
  • The OS (and by virtue of running on it, the hardware) must be so low power it can run for 8 hours with demanding applications running all the time.

We’ve worked for Symbian, and tried hard to create a high performance OS. The Symbian OS was a great smart phone OS for the first decade of the 21st. century. It was feature rich; better than any other compressed-desktop OS available in the phone form factor.

The world’s moved on. The youth of the world want cheap, fast, low power, touch screen and Wifi. Look at this paper by a fifteen year old intern at Morgan Stanley.

Softmachinery is going to deliver this. They were always very uncley.
